IMMEDIATE past chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)
in Delta State Chief Peter Nwaoboshi, was on Tuesday was declared the
winner of the Delta North Senatorial District primaries of the party
with 138 votes.
The rescheduled primary was again abandoned amid crises and violence
that resulted in the arrest of a thugs while officials of the party who
were sent from Abuja staged a walkout when the suspected hoodlums
invaded the venue.
The crises which led to the cancelation of the primaries started
midway when voting was in progress after violence broke out between some
thugs loyal to two opposing aspirants.
Mr. Paul Osaji, a former commissioner in the state, polled 87 votes,
Doris Ubor ,37; Mr. Pascal Adigwe, 27; while Mariam Ali scored four
votes.
Delegates from seven local government areas have concluded their
voting with two more local government areas of Ukwuani and Oshimili
South yet to cast their votes.
However, security agents were able to curtail the violence after they
cut up with one of the thugs, who was the arrowhead of the crises and
beat him up before he was taken away.
Following the crises and the tense security situation, Chairman of
the Election Panel, Mr. Raphael Kukuh, announced the suspension of the
primaries, which he attributed to the security situation.
“I have been directed to cancel this election. This primaries is
hereby declared inconclusive,” Kukuh said, before being hurriedly driven
away from the Cenotaph arena, venue of the voting amid tight security.
However, following the urgent intervention of security agents and the
subsequent restoration of law and order, the leadership of the party in
the state decided to declare the votes at hand.
Mr. Itiako Ikpokpo, the returning officer, declaring Nwaoboshi winner
of the election, said the ballot papers were being taken to the
Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for safe-keeping.
Ikpokpo, the chairman of Isoko South LG who later took over the
conduct of the election said seven local governments completed their
voting, adding that suspected hoodlums disrupted the voting process of
the remaining two local governments, saying with the seven local
governments, Nwaoboshi won the election and urged the people of the area
to be peaceful.
Nwaoboshi who spoke to newsmen, thanked the delegates for voting him,
saying he worked for the party as the secretary in the state.
He said: “After the unfortunate incident, I was asked by agents of
the aspirants to continue the process of counting and announcing the
result of the primaries.
“So, having counted all the votes, I hereby declare Barrister Peter
Nwaoboshi winner of the primaries, having polled 138 votes, which is the
highest among the five aspirants.”
After he was declared winner, Nwaoboshi told reporters that he was
declared winner in a free and fair primaries which was conducted in an
open environment.
He condemned the attempt by those he described as enemies of the
party to disrupt the primaries, urging the national leadership of the
party to take urgent decisive action against the saboteurs.
“I have been declared winner by delegates who came out today to make
their choice. This election is free and conducted live before television
cameras.
