Some serving members of the Akwa Ibom State House, mainly from
Uyo Senatorial District, have defected to the All Progressives Congress
(APC) to pursue their return to the House following their failure to
secure the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) tickets.
The defection is not entirely favourable to them, as those with
strong stakes in PDP may likely start from the scratch at the APC, a
disposition that may not help the aggrieved PDP defectors to actualise
their dreams.
Leading the pack of the lawmakers who defected to APC is the member
representing Uruan State Constituency, Obong Kufreabasi Etuk, who has
just emerged the APC flag bearer for his constituency.
Daily Independent gathered that other aggrieved members who massively
joined APC to catch up with various primaries are not finding their
decisions pleasurable.
Meanwhile, two former deputy speakers of Akwa Ibom State House of
Assembly are set to vie for state and National Assembly seats under APC.
They are Obong Okon Uwah, who is eyeing Ukanafun State Constituency
and Uwem Udoma, who is seeking election into Abak/Ika/Etim Ekpo Federal
Constituency seat.
Udoma was unceremoniously removed as deputy speaker and was replaced
by Obong Uwah. The duo are said to be working together to return to
political relevance.
In a related development, serving lawmakers from Oro are said to be
aggrieved following their failed bid to return to the state Assembly.
Although they are yet to declare their stand on either PDP or APC,
our correspondent gathered that they are waiting for the general
elections to tackle those that defeated them in the primaries.
An aide to one of the House members told our correspondent that:
“some people manipulated the primaries since it is party affairs. We are
waiting for them in the general elections and that will be a different
game altogether”.
