UNILAG Matriculation Date 2014/2015 Announced

The 2014/2015 Matriculation Ceremony of the University of Lagos will hold on Friday, January 23, 2015 at 9:00 a.m. in the UNILAG Main Auditorium, Akoka.

The event is compulsory for all new students of the University.

Fresh students are therefore advised to comply accordingly.

UNILORIN Admitted 12,650 out of 114,700 Candidates - VC

The Vice chancellor of the University of Ilorin Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali during the matriculation ceremony disclosed that the institution admitted only 12,650 students out of the 114,700 applicants.

He further stated that out of the 114,700 applicants only 41,470 met the cut-off mark 180 in UTME to qualify for the post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination screening.

The number of successful students who passed the post-UTME according to the VC was 22,601. While the number of students final admitted were 12,650 with 80 being international students.

You recently emerged the governorship candidate of your party, the United Progressive Party (UPP), for the state – what new thing are you offering?

I have carefully and meticulously studied our state and I have toured all the 27 LGAs of the state and I have discovered their peculiar  problems one after the other  and I am  armed with efficacious and result-oriented solutions to tackle  their problems. I have a 4-cardinal programme which I will apply to remedy these problems and which will positively touch the lives of the people. These are effective and sustainable qualitative education, health care delivery services, industrialization and pragmatic waste management for all the LGAs in the state. There will be fruitful and functional libraries, skill acquisition centres to train and to nurture the teeming unemployed graduates in various vocations for them to become self employed and creators of jobs for others so as to drastically reduce their dependence on white kola jobs. In the health sector, my government will ensure the provision of affordable healthcare delivery services for our people as I said earlier while decent, good and conducive environment would be installed to contain the spread of some infectious diseases among the people. I will equally build sate light towns with modern facilities and by this, a reasonable percentage of our people will be spared from deadly diseases.

NYSC online fee: Stakeholders okay slash

A Conference of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Stakeholders has resolved to reduce the cost of the recently introduced NYSC On-line Registration fee for prospective Corps members.
The stakeholders which reached the agreement in a meeting in Abuja, also agreed that efforts should be made to carry out more sensitization on the On-line Registration at the various Corps Producing Institutions.
They expressed optimism that the move will readily offer full understanding, workability as well as acceptability of the On-line package to the students who are the direct beneficiaries of the programme.
The meeting further highlighted the benefits of the package to include On-line application and Relocation of Corps members from one state to another, adding that it is expected to save Corps members from unnecessary road hazards in pursuance of NYSC issues.

Nigerians kick, as Dangote reneges on cement price

In a move that has confounded industry watchers, distributors, developers and buyers have kicked against the new price of Dangote Cement, as the firm has silently increased the price of its product to N2, 200 per 50kg bag instead of the N1, 000 that it announced on November 3, 2014.
Although the company did not formally announce any increase in price, Daily Independent gathered that it sent out text messages to its distributors on Monday, December 15, 2014, informing them of the new price.
A text message allegedly sent on behalf of the company by one “Bukky, Dangote Cement” to the distributors reads: “Dear customer, kindly note these changes in price: Ibese (delivered) – N1, 745, Ibese (self-collected) – N1, 645 (five trucks and above); N1, 655 (below five trucks), Isolo – N1, 700 (five trucks and above); N1, 710 (below five trucks). The changes are effective today, December 15, 2014. Thanks for your patronage.”

On November 3, 2014, Dangote had slashed the price of cement by 40 per cent.
The new price regime announced by the Group Managing Director of Dangote Cement, Devakumar Edwin, said the company has pegged the Dangote 32.5 cement grade at N1,000 per 50kg bag, while the higher 42.5 grade is to sell for N1,150 per bag.

Nigeria’s future gloomy under Jonathan -Balarabe says

A former Governor of Kaduna State and leader of the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties, Alhaji Balarabe Musa, said on Saturday that the future of Nigeria  under the President Goodluck Jonathan-led government is gloomy.

The former governor noted that the way the country was being governed showed that Jonathan was incapable of running the affairs of Nigeria, arguing that even the president’s sympathisers had come to terms with the reality.

Musa, who claimed that neither the All Progressives Congress nor the Peoples Democratic Party could produce the president in 2015, said his party, the Peoples Redemption Party, though deregistered by INEC, had gone into merger with other political parties to form the next government.

Gunmen kidnap ASUU chairman’s wife in Osogbo

Gunmen have kidnapped  the wife of Chairman, Osun State University chapter of Academic Staff Union of Universities, Mrs. Funmilayo Abiona.

Abiona was abducted  in Osogbo on Friday night.

Our correspondent gathered on Saturday that Mrs. Abiona  closed from her shop around Oke Bale area of Osogbo and was heading home to meet her husband, Dr. Oluseye  Abiona, when the hoodlums who had been on her trail caught up with her and forcefully took her away after they had engaged her in hot argument.

The hoodlums, according to some residents of the area were dressed in red shirts and this made some to believe that the abductors might be members of a cult group from the university.

The abducted woman was said to have been driving home an unregistered Lexus car and was in the car with her two children  when the incident happened.

Lagos Deputy Governor loses father

The death has been announced of a devout Islamic and community leader and politician in Lagos State, Alhaji Jimoh Kareem-Laka Orelope.
He died on December 18, 2014 at the age of 101 years.
According to a statement on Thursday by the Special Assistant (Media) to Lagos State Deputy Governor, Tunde Abatan, the deceased was born to Akeja Oniyanru and Olugbede royal families of Lagos State on February 25, 1913.
He is survived by wife, children, grand children and great grand- children among who is  the incumbent Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire.
He will be buried on Friday (today) in accordance with Islamic rites

Onigbinde writes Keshi, asks him to quit Eagles

A former coach of Nigeria, Adegboye Onigbinde, has disclosed that he has personally written to out-of-contract Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi, to quietly seek a job elsewhere.

Onigbinde spoke with a Nigerian online news portal SuperSport.com.

Of late the calls have been deafening mostly from former Nigerian managers for the erstwhile Mali and Togo coach to leave the Eagles job after he failed to qualify the country for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations in a dismal fashion. The latest calls for Keshi to quite have come from Christian Chukwu, Shaibu Amodu, and Kashimawo Laloko, among others.

Onigbinde said he would not like to be seen repeating himself on Keshi and Eagles’ job as he has specifically asked him then to politely thank the president for considering him worthy for recall and bow out honourably.

Onigbinde said, “On the very day the Presidency asked him to return to his job I personally sent him a text message to politely thank Mr President for the offer and bow out honourably and quietly, too.

“Keshi respectfully replied the text message thanking me and that was it as he went ahead with the two remaining 2015 AFCON qualifying matches against Congo and South Africa, I’m sure the rest is history.

“I volunteered the advice to Keshi because I understand that he won’t work with the Presidency but a different set of people as well as an entirely different environment.

After Borno abductions, military steps up aerial, ground patrols

Following the reported abduction of 185 women by the members of the Boko Haram insurgents in Gumsuri, a community north of Chibok, the military has deployed ground forces and air force helicopter gunships to patrol the area.
Reports had claimed that the insurgents, who attacked Gumsiri, killed 32 men and abducted no fewer than 185 women and children last Sunday.
However, a statement on the Defence Headquarters blog on Friday, stated that the military had not been able to verify the reported abductions by the insurgents although the statement confirmed that some people were killed.
It was stated that the Military High Command was still probing the claim of abductions.
It was further stated that the military had intensified aerial and ground patrols in the area.
The statement added that normalcy had been restored to the area as some of the villagers, who fled the area, had started returning to their homes.

FUOYE Lecturers Protest Following Non-Payment of Allowances

Staff of the Federal University, Oye Ekiti, Ekiti State Yesterday protested against what they described as victimization and highhandedness by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Azuzu.

The aggrieved staff who blocked the Ado-Lokoja-Abuja federal highway as early as 7a.m and made bonfire are accusing the VC of non-payment of staff allowances and non-remittance of tax deducted from their salaries to the appropriate quarters.

According to Mr. Ojo Foluso, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission are yet to respond to the petition they sent in that regard.

How to Recognise Serious Students on Campus(A Must Read)

All that glitters is not gold. Similarly, a popular Igbo proverb says that because all lizards lie on their stomach, you will never know the one(s) that have running stomach. I wonder if lizards do have running stomach but that’s just by the way.

What’s my point?
OK. There are so many students in schools but then, there are students and there are students.

It could also be hard as well as confusing to identify those who are really qualified to bear honorable status of student i.e. those who are really the serious and those who aren’t.

What spurred me into this direction?
Just the other day, I was chatting with a very worried parent whose child seem to be unable to graduate from the university 3 years after the normal duration of his 5 year course.

I was alarmed because I immediately knew why this parent was going through…for the past three years, maybe.

Experts doubt realisation of 2015 budget, Urge FG to ensure strict implementation

Financial experts on Thursday said pegging of 2015 budget at $65 per barrel might not be realistic in view of the persistent fall of oil price in the international market.
They told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that pegging the benchmark above the current oil price of $60 was not good for the nation’s economy.
They therefore urged the Federal Government to ensure strict implementation of all measures being put in place in the 2015 budget proposal to stabilise the economy.
Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, had on December 17, presented N4.36 trillion 2015 budget to the National Assembly.
Okonjo-Iweala said that the budget was cut by N357 billion over the 2014 version.
She said that the budget was aimed at diversifying the economy in 2015 with more focus on tax revenue.
The minister said that a 10 per cent surcharge on private jets, luxury goods, wines and spirits would take effect from the next fiscal year, among others.
She said a 39 per cent surcharge on luxury yachts and five per cent on cars estimated to raise N1.6 billion and N2.6 billion respectively would be placed on luxury goods to discourage import.
A renowned economist, Pat Utomi, said the 2015 budget was peculiar with oil benchmark pegged above the current oil price.

ICAN sets up fund to enhance students’ performance

The Council of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) has set up a fund to assist in raising the standard of tuition houses and ultimately the performance of students at ICAN examinations. The fund is known as the Tuition House Support Fund.
The Institute observed that most tuition houses have the basic challenges of inappropriate venue in terms of building/lecture rooms, inappropriate furniture/fittings for conducive learning, inadequate lecturers, non-existent library facilities, good study materials and students’ negative attitudes towards academics.
In view of the challenges, the Institute is to render technical assistance by providing library support to tuition houses in the following three categories;Tier 1: Donation of library support to the tune of N1million;Tier 2: Donation of library support to the tune of N500,000.00;Tier 3: Donation of library support to the tune of N250,000.00.

School partners with Canadian academy, advocates e-learning

The proprietress, Soundhope Montessori School, Ipaja, Lagos, has said its partnership with a Canadian Academy, Bronston School, is to introduce its pupils to the Canadian curriculum and also smoothen access to its job market.

She said this at the Parents’ Forum held at the school premises on Saturday. According to her, the partnership will involve academic exchanges and regular assessment from tutors which will lead to the award of the Ordinary Secondary School Diploma for the pupils.

Addressing parents, the Principal, Mr. Akindo Santos, justified the introduction of the Canadian curriculum. He said “the dynamism of the society has necessitated global negotiation. We are preparing them for global society, so they are integrated fully and cannot be limited with the inconsistency of the Nigerian curriculum.’’

Speaking at the event, an educationist and the principal partner, TBOG, Mrs. Bimbo Obasuyi, urged parents to be friendly with technology and learn new things. According to her, this will help them adapt to the concept of globalisation.

“The concept of globalisation has exposed pupils to diverse courses where there is dearth of personnel. But parents themselves should try new ideas and be friendly with technology. Parents should no longer insist that their children must study a particular course but allow the children to follow their passion,’’ she said.

Ebola: No more checks in schools

Visits to schools show a relapse in measures against the prevention of the Ebola Virus Disease, writes Folashade Adebayo

A major lesson from the Ebola Virus Disease outbreak is the importance of handwashing and personal hygiene. In spite of the certification by the World Health Organisation which has effectively declared Nigeria free of the virus, experts have relentlessly urged individuals, schools, groups and organisations to keep up vigilance against the virus.

But checks by our correspondent in Ogun and Lagos states have revealed that many schools may have jettisoned the rituals of hand washing and temperature monitoring barely five months after the first Ebola case was reported in the country.

While Nigeria and Senegal may have seen the end of the virus, there is no slowing down in neighbouring Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia. A sixth country in West Africa, Mali, recently announced its first cases and several contacts. According to the WHO, the virus has killed more than 6,000 people out of 17,000 reported cases mainly in West Africa.

At the height of the outbreak which occurred during the long term break for primary and secondary schools, resumption had been a major issue which pitted the Nigerian Union of Teachers against the Federal Government. The leadership of the organisation had insisted on the provision of infra red thermometers, sanitisers, wash hand basins and soaps, among other materials before schools could resume.

A young woman, Oyindolapo Shittu, proved that being married should not be a barrier to a resounding academic success recently, when she emerged the best graduating student at the 40th convocation of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State.

Although she was a medical student, which obviously made her experience more demanding, she also carted away 12 out of the 18 prizes up for grabs in the ivory tower, leaving the other hundreds of students to scramble for the remaining six.

It was therefore not surprising that on each occasion when she was invited to the podium to receive her prize, a thundering ovation followed her footsteps.

With the 12 prizes from the Faculty of Clinical Sciences alone in her kitty, it was simply easy for her to win the Alhaji Kabir Usman Prize for the Best Overall Student with the Highest Number of Prizes for the 2012/2013 session.

Her other laurels are the Glaxo Allenbury and the Paediatrics Association Prizes Prize for the Best Result in M.B.C.H.B Degree in Paediatrics; Prof. O. Taiwo Memorial Prize for the Best in Clinical Examination; Olaningbe Makanjuola Memorial and the Nigeria Medical Association prizes for the best final M.B.C.H.B degree examination.

Others include the Lawrence Omole Prize for the Best in Community Health; Maj. Gen. Olufemi Olutoye, Candido-Da-Rocha, and the Adekunle Okute prizes for the best in Surgery; Tony Elemelu as well as the Prof. Adewale Akinsola prizes for the best graduating student in Medicine.

But how did Shittu make mincemeat of others, particularly engineering students, who many believe, usually win academic laurels with ease? How did she cope with the marital and domestic challenges not just to study Medicine but also to emerge the best graduate in her set?

Institution of JAMB centres, a welcome development’

The Chairman, Parent-Teacher-Association of the Babcock University Schools, Ogba, Lagos, Mr. Mykel Jegede, has described the establishment of Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination Accredited Registration Centres by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board as a welcome development.

The initiative, Jegede said, would go a long way in reducing the numerous challenges that pupils face yearly during UTME.

He stated this during the school’s recent PTA meeting at Ogba, Lagos.

Urging parents to ensure that their children register for the forthcoming UTME at the accredited centres, he noted that such move would greatly ease the candidates’ inconveniences.

Meanwhile, Jegede said the PTA would establish a second science laboratory, as well as upgrade the computer laboratory in the school to better the learning condition of the pupils.

He urged parents to collaborate with teachers in training the pupils so that they can become useful to their families and the society.

Jegede, who commended the authorities of the school on their achievement, also hailed their cordial relationship with the PTA.

KADPOLY Temporarily Shut Down Following Attack Threat

The Kaduna State Polytechnic has been temporarily shut down by the management of the institution following an alleged imminent attack from the terrorist group, Boko Haram.

According to the circular by the registrar of the institution students has been asked to proceed immediately on Christmas and New Year break to resume on January 5th, 2015.

However, fresh and National Diploma 1 students as well as staff of the institution are exempted from the break.

A stop and search security system has been established at the entrance into the institution.

WAEC Nov/Dec Results and Performance Statistics Released, 28,817 Results withheld

The West African Examination Council has release the result of November December Exams.

According to the statistics, West African Examination Council (WAEC) on Thursday released this year’s November/December, with only 72,522 candidates representing 29.37 per cent obtaining credits in five subjects and above including English language and Mathematics.

Out of 246,853 candidates that sat for the examination (132,521 males & 114,332 females), 241,162 candidates had their results fully released.

The council announced that results of 28,817 candidates representing 11.67 were with held as a result of malpractice.

5,691 candidates have a few of their subjects still being processed due to errors mainly traceable to the candidates.

It was learnt that efforts are being made to correct the mistakes so such candidates can access their results

Of the total number of candidates that sat the examination, 75,313 candidates (30.50%), obtained 6 credits and above.

110,346 candidates, representing 44.70% obtained 5 credits and above. 145,036 candidates, representing 58.75% obtained credits and above in 4 subjects.

Cultists: Osun Secondary School Students Violent Clash

No fewer than 15 pupils were injured on Monday as suspected secondary school student cultists engaged in a violent clash involving pupils of St. James Anglican, and Ansar-Ud-Deen Secondary Schools in Osogbo.
Eyewitnesses told our correspondent that most of the students engaged in the clash belonged to rival cult groups.
Some said it was a fight over a girl while other said it was a reprisal by a group whose member was injured on Friday.
Sources hinted that the rampaging students ran in different directions, thus causing panic, compelling vehicles and motorcycles passing through Oba Adesoji Aderemi, Osogbo East By-pass to make a detour, with a view to avoiding being caught up in the melee.

A female student said, “Just as we were about settling down in school this morning, friends of the student of Saint James’ student, who was injured during  last week fight, stormed our school and started using matchete and charms on us.

 

“Some students were injured. We learnt that it was a reprisal, one student, who was said to be a cult guy, was said to have been beaten by members of a rival group and others came on a revenge mission.”

FG Worried over Poor WAEC Results

The poor results recorded in the last Senior Secondary School Certificate examination conducted by the West African Examinations Council has been a source of concern to the federal government, the Minister of Education, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, has disclosed.
In a bid to check mass failure among students in general examinations under the West African Examination Council and National Examination Council, the federal government has said that it would boost the inspectorate division of the Ministry of Education.
The Minister of Education, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, who disclosed this at the 50th anniversary and 22nd convocation ‎ceremony of Auchi Polytechnic, Edo State, at the weekend, said “To remedy this situation, government has taken steps to improve on the capability of the Inspectorate Division of the federal ministry of Education to enable it monitor the quality of teaching and facilities available in our secondary schools.”
The Minister further disclosed that in addition, government is working out modalities for regular training and retraining of teachers through various short term courses, workshops and seminars.

Provide better education roadmap, lawmakers urge FG

The Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Justice, Dr. Ali Ahmad, and the Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Mr. Razak Atunwa, have called on the Federal Government to initiate policies that would boost the quality of education.

The government’s current policies, the duo said, were not friendly to students, especially those in higher institutions.

They spoke in Ilorin, Kwara State, during the first Pan African Students’ Parliamentary Conference in honour of Ahmad.

The theme of the conference was, ‘Role of student parliament in peaceful co-existence: Connecting Africa’s future leaders.’

Ahmad, while frowning on the lack of conducive learning environment, said the development was only exposing the students to difficult times.

He said, “The Golden Age of Nigerian education can still come back. Nigeria has not changed. The people have not changed; only those in government have changed. Education is not in their priority list. So, until we do that, our students will continue to suffer and our education will continue to suffer.

“I remember those times, when you graduated from the university in Nigeria, you were equal with those who graduated from Oxford, Cambridge and Harvard. Now, we are 1,000 steps behind them.”

MTN Foundation awards 1,372 scholarships to students

The MTN Foundation has reiterated its impact on the development of the Nigerian youth, by awarding scholarships to deserving students.

The Chairman of the foundation, Ambassador Hamzat Ahmadu, stated this during the presentation of the fifth MTNF Science and Technology Scholarship awards in Lagos.

FUNNAB VC urges groups to support varsities

The Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Prof. Olusola Oyewole, has urged professional bodies and blue-chip companies to emulate the gesture of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria.

The association had donated a building named, “Centre for Linking Accounting with Business of Developing Economies” to the university.

Oyewole, who spoke during the presentation of the research centre, called on other corporate organisations to emulate ANAN by supporting the ongoing efforts at transforming the nation’s education sector.

He said, “We congratulate ANAN for the history being made today. I believe we are entering a journey of collaboration that would be of benefit to our university and the association. ANAN is not only donating a building, they are also donating a research centre.”

Calling on ANAN to collaborate with FUNAAB, the VC said the quality of a university was not just about buildings but mainly about research.

Yabatech Wins 18th Nigeria Polytechnic Games (Bida 2014)

The Yaba College of Technology, Lagos, has emerged the overall winner of the 18th Nigeria Polytechnic Games (NIPOGA), tagged BIDA 2014, held at the Federal Polytechnic, Bida.

The college won 34 medals, made up of 17 gold, eight silver and nine bronze.

The second position went to The Polytechnic Ibadan, with 14 gold, five silver and 11 bronze medals. Abia State Polytechnic, Aba, took the 3rd position with 11 gold, four silver and seven bronze medals.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that out of the 42 polytechnics that took part, 29 got medals while 13 did not secure any medal.

Many students believe the decision of students represented by the Student Union Government, led by Com. Abel Nnok Ndu to boycott exams and go on PEACEFUL
protests seeking for reduction in school charges was miscalculated and totally wrong in purpose and timing. For very obvious reasons, the final year students
especially, are the most pained by this action and no doubt, the most hit. BUT WAS IT WORTH IT?

First, on the premise that the purpose of the boycott and protest was not justified, I beg you to if you are a UNIJOS student, look at your last school fees receipt and go through it again.

Beginning with the notorious University Development Levy of N10,000.00; is there any justification for such charges considering several months of our lives that were wasted by the strike by our lecturers which produced very lofty grants to universities including University of Jos? Prof. Tyoden who introduced that levy claimed it was because of lack of funds from the Federal Government who own the school.

Stop human rights abuses, activists advise FG

Human rights activists based in Osun State yesterday staged a rally to mark the 2014 World Human Rights Day with a call on the government at the centre to end with immediate effect various human rights abuses in the country particularly insecurity, corruption, impunity and executive lawlessness.
The human rights activists held the rally at the Nelson Mandela Freedom Park in Osogbo where they demanded also reduction in the fuel pump price following the drastic fall of crude oil prices in the international market.
They specifically called on President Goodluck Jonathan to address the insecurity challenges in the nation with all seriousness and security of purpose, adding that “the most fundamental human right is the right to life and dignity.”

Mimiko signs Medical Varsity Bill

Daily Independent.. Ondo State Governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, has signed into laws the bill establishing the Ondo State University of Medical Science and Amendment Appropriation Bill 2014.
He signed the two bills at the Cocoa Conference Hall of the governor’s office in Akure.
In his address after the signing of the bills, Mimiko said the university would not just be another university but a global reference point in the area of health.
“We are not just building a university but a specialised one that will beat all national benchmark. The university will be a global reference point in medical care.”
He said  facilities at the Trauma Centre, Mother and Child Hospital, Kidney Centre, Gani Fawawehinmi Diagnostic Centre and others would not only serve the university but the entire Ondo State.
Mimiko, who commended the leaders and members of the Ondo State House Assembly for the various bills passed this year, said his administration had invested much in all the tertiary institutions in Ondo State and the result are evidence based.

APC candidate will be next president – Ikuforiji

Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Adeyemi Ikuforiji, on Wednesday, expressed the hope that the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) would be the next Nigerian President.
Ikuforiji expressed the hope at the APC presidential primary election going on in Lagos. The election began on Wednesday and would end on Thursday (today).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that delegates at the election have continued to hold discussions on who should fly the party’s flag in 2015.
Ikuforiji told newsman at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, venue of the election, that the party hoped to produce the next Nigerian President.
On a speculation that some aspirants might have withdrawn from the race, Ikuforiji said it would be a good development. “If the APC ends up having one aspirant, it will be a good omen.
“APC is a party with ideas and men of integrity; we are desirous of moving Nigeria forward.If aspirants step down, it means they have seen something better in the other aspirant, and it is a show of patriotism,” the speaker said.

Nwaoboshi wins Delta North Senatorial primary election amid violence

IMMEDIATE past chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State Chief Peter Nwaoboshi, was on Tuesday was declared the winner of the Delta North Senatorial District primaries of the party with 138 votes.
The rescheduled primary was again abandoned amid crises and violence that resulted in the arrest of a thugs while officials of the party who were sent from Abuja staged a walkout when the suspected hoodlums invaded the venue.
The crises which led to the cancelation of the primaries started midway when voting was in progress after violence broke out between some thugs loyal to two opposing aspirants.
Mr. Paul Osaji, a former commissioner in the state, polled 87 votes, Doris Ubor ,37; Mr. Pascal Adigwe, 27; while Mariam Ali scored four votes.
Delegates from seven local government areas have concluded their voting with two more local government areas of Ukwuani and Oshimili South yet to cast their votes.

FG flags off food safety, sanitation campaign

The Federal Government, through the office of the Special Adviser to the President on Ethics and Values, has concluded plans to flag off food safety and sanitation campaign in all the 36 states of the federation, including the FCT.
The Special Adviser to the President on Ethics and Values, Sarah Jibril, disclosed this while speaking with Daily Independent at the end of the launch of the programme in Kogi State.
She noted that the launch of the programme is aimed at saving lives through promotion of food safety and environmental sanitation.
This, she reiterated, would prevent illnesses caused by contaminated food, which, according to her, “is one of the leading causes of sufferings and deaths in the developing world and also affects millions of people in all countries.”
Speaking through her Chief Press Secretary, Abel Nwabuche, Jibril stressed that: “With the increase and constant movement of people from one country to the other, and the presence of refugees and tourists, the chances of high risk of contacting diseases through contaminated food cannot be overemphasized.”
Responding to inquiries from Daily Independent, National President of Royal Life Saving Society of Nigeria, Boniface Ihesiulor, an organisation that is partnering the Federal Government to execute the programme, said the programme is targeting “to train and examine candidates in all subjects of life-saving, lifeguard, food safety and hygiene; establish and maintain life saving centres across the nation with emergency medical services.”

Nine new federal varsities yet to get governing councils – Shekarau says

The nine new universities established by the Federal Government in 2011 across the country are yet to get their governing councils, Minister of Education, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, has said.
Shekarau spoke on Monday during an impact assessment tour of the Federal University, Otuoke, Bayelsa State, one of the new universities.
The others are Dutse, Dutsin-Ma, Kashere, Lafia, Lokoja, Ndufu-Alike-Ikwo, Oye-Ekiti and Wukari.
Shekarau, however, assured that the universities would soon get their governing councils in place to enable their managements move the institutions forward.
He also expressed optimism that in spite of the threats by the Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (ASUU), it will not embark on any industrial action soon.
The university teachers have been threatening an indefinite strike over what they termed non-implementation of agreement reached between ASUU and the Federal Government.

Omatseye wins Delta South APC Senate primary election

THE All Progressives Congress (APC) On Tuesda held its primary for Delta South Senatorial district with Temisan Omatseye emerging winner of the election having polled a total of 424 votes.
The primary election which was held at the Oleh Civic Centre in Isoko South Local Government Area had his closest contender, Yemi Emiko, scoring 181 votes while the third aspirant, Dr. Austin Urette, pulled a distant 18 votes.
On the success of his election, Omatseye described it as a victory for the people of Delta South, stressing that APC would emerge victorious at the general elections.
In the same vein, a former Delta State Commissioner of Justice and Attorney General, Chief Andrew Orugbo, emerged winner of the APC House of Representatives primary for Ughelli North/Ughelli South and Udu Federal Constituency, pulling a total of 496 votes to beat his closest rival, Sylvester Akpodiete, who scored 333, while the third aspirant, Thompson Mashini, polled 77 votes.

Troops dislodge B’Haram from Balmo Forest, kill 20 Revealed by the defence Authorities

The Defence authorities have said that the troops of the Nigerian Army have captured the Balmo Forest, believed to be one of the major hideouts of insurgents in the North-East.

The Balmo Forest links Borno, Bauchi and Adamawa states and it is said to host some of the training programmes of the insurgents.

The Defence authorities said in some tweets posted on the twitter handle of the military on Tuesday that 20 insurgents were killed with an unspecified number injured in the fierce encounter to capture the fortified forest.

It was stated that the special forces recovered some rifles and motorcycles during the raid on Balmo and an adjoining Lame forest.

It was further stated in another tweet that the soldiers carried out a separate raid on Hildi, Adamawa State and recovered “some documents, including sketches , list of communities apparently slated for attack.”

According to the tweet, the special forces also killed seven insurgents and recovered five rifles, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, bow and arrows from the fleeing insurgents in the Hildi operation.

The Peoples Democratic Party has given conditions under which it said its presidential candidate will engage in a debate with the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress.

The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Chief Olisa Metuh, stated this while briefing journalists in Abuja on Tuesday on the plan for the party’s convention, which holds on Wednesday (today) and Thursday.

The convention holds at the Eagles Square, Abuja.

He said that President Goodluck Jonathan would be ready to debate with any presidential candidate, but insisted that such a debate must be based on issues.

He said, “We will be willing to debate. We want it, we ask for it because we want Nigerians to know who is the best to lead this country. But let us elevate the conduct of this election. We will base it (the debate) on who is the best for this country in terms of unity of this nation, who is best to stabilise our polity and who is best to lead us to prosperity.

“On those three and other issues we will debate with whoever is the candidate of the APC.”

He insisted that the party was convinced that Jonathan would win the presidential election, adding that the duo of a former Head of State, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) and a former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, put together would not defeat the President.

Insurgency: Jonathan, Gowon seek improved inter-religious harmony

President Goodluck Jonathan and a former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon, on Tuesday, said inter-religious harmony remained an important ingredient for national development.

They therefore urged leaders of various faith-based institutions in the country to embrace peace and preach love as a way of tackling insurgency.

Jonathan and Gown spoke in Abuja at the official presentation of the Kukah Centre, founded by the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto, Rev. Fr. Hassan Kukah.

Jonathan specifically advised the leadership of both the Islamic and Christianity religion as well as traditional rulers to live in harmony in order to collectively find solutions to the country’s problems.

He said, “Democracy is not just about political parties or politicians; it is not just about winning elections, it is about freedom, about development, and above all, it is about civilisation.

“It is in this regard that we must identify and support the structures of democracy in order to meet the yearnings and aspirations of our people.”

He challenged the Kukah Centre to, in line with its objectives, conceptualise and articulate proactive strategies that could reshape policy consistency for the attainment of an enduring democracy.

FG opposes bail for 11 Biafran activists

The Federal Government has filed a counter motion before the Federal High Court, Enugu, opposing the bail application brought by 11 members of Biafra Zionist Federation (BZF) who are facing trial before the Court for treason and other related criminal acts.
The accused persons are the BZF leader, Ben Onwuka; Ndubuisi Nnamchi, Kelvin Eke, Japhet Nwodo, Fidelis Nwonu and Paulinus Uzoegbu.
Others were Sunday Chukwuma, Uduma Uduma, Betrand Obiekwe, Abraham Ugwu and Ijaga Sampson.
Justice D.V. Agishi of the Federal High Court, Enugu, had on November 19 remanded the 11 accused persons in prison custody after they were arraigned before her court on a four-count charge of treason, conspiracy and attempt to secede from Nigeria.
All the accused persons were in court on Tuesday on prison uniforms, while there was very heavy security presence within and outside the court premises as well as the entire vicinity.
At the resumption of the trial, the Zonal Legal Officer, Federal Ministry of Justice, E.E. Nwokoro, who represented the prosecutor, said at the last adjourned date, the Attorney General of the Federation received an application for the bail of all the accused persons.

Alao-Akala dumps PDP, picks LP Gov ticket

Following his loss at the Oyo State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primaries, former Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala has defected to the Labour Party (LP) where he was said to have been offered the party’s governorship ticket.
Authoritative source confided in Daily Independent that a leader of LP in Oke-Ogun area of the state had told other gubernatorial contestants, including Sharafadeen Alli, Nurudeen Akinyo, Kazeem Adedeji and Olu Abiala, to allow Alao-Akala because of his war chest.
It was gathered that the leader simply told them that they could not muster the financial resources to fight election battles, urging them to give way to the former governor, following which the Islamic faithful among them were said to have started jostling for the running-mate position.
It would be recalled that at an enlarged meeting of stakeholders in Ibadan, some of the leaders of the party, who are sympathetic to Alao-Akala’s course said the reason behind the call to quit PDP is basically because of the insincerity and injustice in the party.
Abraham Ojo, his media aide, in a press statement on behalf of Akala, said: “ thousands of supporters of the former governor today storm the Bodija residence to deliberate on the way forward after the injustice meted to him by the PDP.

Jonathan urges politicians to redefine democracy

President Goodluck Jonathan has enjoined politicians to help redefine the country’s democracy as vehicle for strengthening national unity and development rather than using same as a tool for ceaseless quarrelling and use of abusive language.
Jonathan spoke on Tuesday at Merit House, Abuja, during the public presentation and official launch of Kukah Centre, founded by prominent cleric and Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Hassan Kukah.
The Kukah Centre, which became active last year, was established to strengthen national debate, improve governance and encourage Nigerians to take an active role in the country’s leadership.
It also intends to actively promote conversations among Nigeria’s faith communities, as well as between leaders in faith and public policy.

FRSC deploys 100 officer, vehicles for APC National Convention

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Tuesday said it would deploy over 100 officers and 15 patrol vehicles for APC National Convention in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the convention, slated for Wednesday at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, will produce the party’s presidential candidate for 2015 election.

Mr Hyginus Omeje, the Lagos Sector Commander of the corps, told NAN that arrangement had been put in place to ensure free-flow of vehicular movement in the state.

“Regarding the convention that is coming tomorrow, we have noted the venue where the convention is going to take place.

“We have identified the critical traffic bottleneck, especially the junctions that link those areas. Ours is to ensure free-flow of traffic within those axes.

“But we will not allow Lagosians to be trapped in traffic because of any convention.

“For the locations we have mapped out, we will deploy more than 100 officers to them.

“And we are going to deploy nothing less than 15 vehicles, including our tow trucks,’’ he said.

Obanikoro asks court to dismiss eligibility suit

A former Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obaniko, on Tuesday asked a Lagos State High Court in Ikeja to dismiss a suit seeking to pronounce him ineligible to contest election into any political office in Nigeria.
The applicants are members of the Peoples Democratic Party, namely: Micheal Ogun, Suleiman Saheed and Wasiu Odusan.
Joined as respondents are Obanikoro, the PDP and the Independent National Electoral Commission.
The applicants had, in an earlier ex parte application, specifically asked Justice Kazeem Alogba to restrain Obanikoro from contesting the just concluded governorship primary of the PDP in Lagos State.
But Justice Kazeem Alogba rather than restrain Obanikoro from contesting the primary,  ordered the applicants to put him on notice and adjourned till Tuesday.
Obanikoro, however, lost the primary conducted on Monday to his prime contender, Mr. Jimi Agbaje.
At the resumed proceeding on Tuesday, Obanikoro responded with a preliminary objection filed through his counsel, Mr. Gbenga Ojo.
The applicants has asked  the court to declare that  Obanikoro was ineligible to stand any form of election in the country, having allegedly had past history of unvisited crime.

Troops capture Boko Haram camp in Balmo forest, others as revealed by Defence Authorities

The Defence authorities have said that the troops of the Nigerian Army have captured the Balmo Forest believed to be one of the major hideouts of insurgents in the North East.
The Balmo Forest links Borno, Bauchi and Adamawa States and is said to host some of the training programmes of the insurgents.
The Defence authorities said in some tweets posted on the twitter handle of the military on Tuesday that 20 insurgents were killed with an unspecified number injured in the fierce encounter to capture the fortified forest.
It was stated that the Special Forces recovered some rifles and motorcycles during the raid on the Balmo and an adjoining Lame forest.
It was further stated in another tweet that the soldiers who carried out another raid on Hildi , Adamawa State, recovered ‘some documents including sketches , list of communities apparently slated for attack.’
According to the tweet, the Special Forces also killed seven insurgents and recovered five rifles, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, bow and arrows from the fleeing insurgent in the Hildi operation.
It was added that six of the soldiers who were injured in the attacking are receiving treated.
The military was conducting the operation against the insurgents on land and air in various fronts, it was added.

In July this year, the University of Ilorin recorded a feat with its ranking as the best University in Nigeria by world universities’ ranking agency, the 4 International Colleges and Universities (4ICU). The international higher education search engine, which constantly reviews the performance of accredited universities across the world, also adjudged Unilorin as the 20th best university in Africa and 1842nd in the world.
The Vice-Chancellor noted that the University would not rest in its quest to ensure that its alumni compete favourably with other graduates from universities around the world and it will therefore take all the observations, which might be raised by the accreditation team, with utmost seriousness.

Minna Jailbreak: Prisons Controller, others suspended

Interior minister, Comrade Abba Moro has ordered the suspension of the Niger State Controller of Prisons following the jailbreak that led to the escape of over 300 inmates.

The suspension came as a result of the approval of the recommendations of the Controller General of the Nigerian Prisons Service, Dr Peter Ekpendu for the immediate removal and suspension of some officers pending the outcome of Investigation on the jailbreak at the Medium Security Prison, Minna.

A statement by Ope Fatinikun, Public Relations Officer, Nigerian Prisons Service gave the names of the officers as  the Controller of Prisons, Niger state Command, Musa Maiyaki; the officer-in-Charge, Medium Security Prison Minna, ACP MOHAMMED BENA and all other Officers on duty on 6th December 2014 when the jailbreak happened.

Meanwhile, the Controller General of Prisons, Dr Peter Ekpendu, also ordered the immediate transfer of 55 Officers and Men of the Zonal and state Headquarters Minna to Medium Security Prison Minna and Old Prison Minna to beef up security in the two (2) Prisons.(Vanguard)
